Over the course of several years (2004 - 2009), I made a bunch of trips to china. In fact, I lived and worked in Inner Mongolia and Beijing for about two years in total. China is a land of transition, and I attempted to capture that in images. Many aspects of both traditional an Maoist cultures have been maintained, while the increasing modernization and westernization make inroads. Capitalism has become the new communism, and development the new tradition. The time I spent there was a time of great transition, with the practically complete rebuilding of Beijing for both modernization and for the Olympic games. Inner Mongolia saw changes just as drastic, with new towns created, new industries made, and new immigrants from elsewhere in China. |
